Recently, a nice woman visited us at Sofia Implant Centre with a desire for a major dental restoration. The lady, who came all the way from Scotland, was extremely motivated and enthusiastic in anticipation of her new smile – she had done a thorough research on the Internet and seemed well informed of the implant procedures. Unfortunately, early on, the 3D scan showed a complete lack of stable bone needed for implantation. The news surprised and upset her deeply. Her diagnosis required long and difficult treatment.
Often patients have false expectations based on advertisements and conversations with sales consultants over the Internet. Many imagine that the treatment process is faster and easier than it actually is! It is amazing how many people are willing to go straight for a surgery, based on promises for a quick and easy fix. While this may often be the case, there are patients who are not suitable for an implant treatment. They become easy victims of some clinics, led mostly by commercial motives. Our experience shows that this happens often in Turkey being a popular dental tourism spot. You can recognize such clinics and sales people by their promise for fast, easy and cheap treatment.
So are implants right for me?
The basic requirement is you must be in good general health. Contrary to expectations, age is not a problem. You should not have any active mouth infections before starting the treatment. If any such, they must be treated beforehand.
Start with a simple examination – a panoramic X-ray. It costs just about 10 Euro and gives a general idea of the teeth condition. Sadly, it cannot prove the presence of enough jawbone for implantation and this is actually the most common risk factor for dental implants. For this you will need a 3D scan. As the lack of bone seems quite common among patients, we have created a separate video with details of what is to be done in such cases.
Other risk factors include certain diseases such as diabetes and cancer, as well as taking certain specific medications.
Plan your logistics! According to your personal treatment plan, you may need several visits to the clinic every few months.
And last but not least – personal hygiene. It is because of the lack of good hygiene that many people end up with implants. And if you think that you would not change anything, our advice is better save your money!
