Missing a tooth? Why You Shouldn’t Delay Dental Implant Placement

by Sara Boulhanna

🦷✨Have you lost a tooth and are unsure what to do next?🦷✨

Tooth loss is not merely an aesthetic concern but poses significant risks to your overall health and well-being. Neglecting a missing tooth can lead to various complications affecting both the functionality and appearance of your face. Delaying treatment after tooth loss can result in serious health and functional issues. Timely implant treatment is crucial for preserving bone structure, maintaining proper bite alignment, and ensuring overall oral health.

When a tooth is missing, there are generally two treatment options — placing a dental bridge or a dental implant. Whenever possible, the implant is the recommended choice, as it is currently the least invasive solution. With a dental bridge, the two healthy teeth on either side of the gap need to be ground down to support the bridge, whereas with an implant, this is not necessary. The implant is the most conservative and tissue-friendly method for restoring a missing tooth.

Why You Shouldn’t Delay Dental Implant Placement:

  1. Bone Resorption and Future Treatment Complications

It is advisable to wait for a period of three to six months before placing the implant. Waiting longer increases the risk of bone resorption. This means a decrease in bone density and height, which can complicate or even render future implant placement impossible without additional procedures like bone grafting. According to specialists, reduced bone quality affects treatment options if the patient decides to receive a dental implant.

  2. Bite and Chewing Function Disorders

The absence of a tooth causes the redistribution of chewing forces onto the remaining teeth, potentially leading to their wear, loosening, or loss. Additionally, adjacent teeth may tilt into the empty space, disrupting the bite and leading to further problems with chewing and speaking.

  3. Aesthetic and Psychological Consequences

Tooth loss, especially in the front of the mouth, can lead to changes in facial appearance, such as premature aging and a decrease in self-esteem. This can negatively impact social interactions and quality of life.

🦷 How Does Dental Implant Treatment Proceed?

Dental implant treatment typically involves the following stages:

  1. Diagnosis and Planning

A thorough examination is conducted, including a 3D scan, to assess bone structure and plan the implantation.

  2. Surgical Procedure

The implant is placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia. The procedure usually takes between 30 minutes and several hours, depending on the complexity of the case. The procedure itself is gentle, well-tolerated by patients, and painless. As for recovery after the procedure, the main recommendation is to consume liquid and cold foods on the day of surgery to avoid stressing the surgical area. Already by the next day, patients can return to their normal routine without significant restrictions.

If the patient needs a tooth extraction, an assessment will be made to determine whether the implant can be placed on the same day, during the same procedure, to shorten the overall treatment time. In many cases, this is possible.

  3. Osseointegration

After placement, the implant is left to integrate with the bone over a period of several weeks to a few months, depending on the patient’s individual characteristics.

  4. Placement of Abutment and Crown

Following successful osseointegration, an abutment is placed, and a permanent crown is attached, restoring the function and aesthetics of the tooth.

✅ Conclusion

Timely dental implant treatment is essential to prevent complications such as bone resorption, bite disorders, and aesthetic issues. Consult with a specialist to assess your condition and plan appropriate treatment.
